Read this first — how the VAO question paper changed
Before 2018, TNPSC conducted a separate exam for the Village Administrative Officer (VAO) post — a separate syllabus, a separate question paper. But from 2018, TNPSC changed this system: it combined the VAO post with other posts (Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Field Surveyor, Typist, etc.) under Group 4 Combined Civil Services Examination-IV (CCSE-IV), with a single common question paper for everyone. In other words — there has been no separate "VAO exam" after 2018; it is the Group 4 exam. So for recent VAO preparation, the full Group 4 question papers for 2022, 2024, and 2025 given below are the right practice material.

Standalone VAO exams before 2018 (2011–2016)
During these years, VAO was conducted as a standalone exam — the question paper structure differed from the current Group 4 exam. These can be used for general knowledge practice, but rely on the papers after 2018 above to understand the current exam pattern.

How to use previous question papers
- First attempt the 2025, 2024, and 2022 papers as a timed (3-hour) mock exam
- Find the reason behind every wrong answer — mark the questions you guessed
- Separately list frequently recurring topics (e.g., Tamil Nadu history, general science, current affairs)
- Since only a Qualifying Mark is needed in the Tamil section, plan to spend more time on General Studies/Aptitude
- Re-practice the last 3 years' papers at least twice — recurring question patterns become clear
- Compare against the final answer key to calculate your score, and compare it against previous cutoff trends

Why was the VAO exam merged with Group 4?
From 2018, TNPSC stopped conducting the Village Administrative Officer post as a standalone exam and combined it with other posts (Junior Assistant, Bill Collector, Field Surveyor, etc.) under Group 4 Combined Civil Services Examination-IV as a single common exam. The question paper, syllabus, and exam pattern are the same for VAO and Group 4 applicants — only post allocation is split by rank based on preference list.
Does the VAO question paper pattern differ before and after 2018?
Yes. Before 2018, VAO was conducted as a standalone exam with a separate syllabus and question paper structure. From 2018, VAO candidates write the common Group 4 CCSE-IV paper — total 300 marks, 200 multiple-choice questions (Tamil qualifying section 150 marks + General Studies/Aptitude section 150 marks), 3 hours. So papers after 2018 are far more relevant for practice.
How many years of question papers should I practice for VAO preparation?
It's best to thoroughly practice at least the last 3 exams (2022, 2024, 2025) — these are closest to the current syllabus and question difficulty. The 2018 paper is also useful additionally. Standalone VAO exams before 2018 (2011-2016) are useful only for general knowledge and don't directly match the current question paper structure.
